Hunter 44360 Review by CTE

I like this thermostat for AC use and the programmable feature save me money, since I could program it to turn to 80 degrees when no is home. Hoever I could not get the heat to work with it. The AC tech that I called said I have a straght heat unit, no Heat Pump. When ever I turned the heat on, the AC and the heat worked at the same time.

A lightening strike disabled my thermostat. I looked for an identical replacement and found it on Amazon.com. The Hunter Fan Company Model 44360 was easy to install myself and has worked flawlessly.

Hunter 44360 Review by moondog "pogenog" (Portland, OR)

As stated in another review here by K. Schmitt and at least one other, there are wiring issues if you have an older heat pump. In my situation, the existing thermostat (a Honeywell dome) had no Y1 wire. When I called Hunter tech support, they told me this model would not work with my heat pump, which seemed like nonsense based on the packaging saying it will work with a single-stage heat pump, and on the simplicity of the old thermostat. I ended up having to call a furnace repair guy who told me that 1) Honeywell tech support was wrong; 2) the wiring diagram in the instructions was wrong and "the worst he'd ever seen;" and 3) the wires going to terminals "Y" and "W" on the old stat had to both go to Y1 on the new stat to make it work. This seems to have solved my problem, BUT DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF. I am not recommending this as a solution for you, I am only saying that the thermostat works with my old heat pump after having an expert wire it in a way neither the instructions or Hunter tech support recommended, so there may be a way to make it work for you if you are having a problem. But if you do anything yourself, you act at your own risk and could damage your system, or hurt yourself. There are other reviews here saying this thermostat is junk and fails in 6 months, I'll post an update if I find that to be true.
[Update after a couple days of use] This thing is not as difficult to program as some of the reviews suggest. And if you have someone visiting who wants to override the program and manually set a temp, all they have to do is push a big button on the front that says "home today" and they can manually set a temp. It won't hold that, it will revert back to program later in the day, but they can always do it again. (Setting a permanent hold is difficult--following the instructions I haven't been able to yet.) Here's what I don't like so far. 1) This thing is flimsy, just pushing the programming buttons tends to make it detach from its base, so be ready to catch it. 2) If you are gone on weekdays, and home on weekends, get a 5-2 programmable. I think is is better to have a separate program for weekends than every day the same the way this one programs.
